Empty calories foods are foods that we eat that provide few if any minerals and/or nutrients. Nutrients and minerals are vital to the health of our body. We as Black people in America should be able to recognize these types of "foods" so we can eliminate them from our diet. These empty calorie foods are cheap, accessible, abundant and deadly. Approximately half of all African Americans are obese compared to 32.6% of whites. Obesity is directly related to our number one killer, heart disease.
Examples of Empty Calorie Foods
Candy, candy bars, cakes, (Little Debbie style cakes), cookies, salty chips, pork skins, pastries, donuts, sugary beverages, etc. Stay away from bottled sugary drinks, and any foods wrapped in cellophane that are mass produced. These really shouldn't be classified as food. They are a concoction of refined sugar, fat, and chemicals. These "foods" generally have a high sodium, sugar and/or fat content. They are increasing our weight, and inflammation which are directly related to our high rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
The bottom line is every time we take a bite of these high fats, high sugar, high sodium, highly addictive chemical concoctions, we are killing our bodies, and adding to the statistics. Immediately stop eating and drinking these concoctions. If you have these concoctions in your house - throw them out. Do not feed this to our kids. These are contributing to the death of Black people - stop eating them - start today!
