Empty Calorie Problem: When We Drink by Dr. Keisha Bates
Empty calories are foods or drinks that provide very little to no vitamins and/or minerals. They do provide unnecessary high fats and sugars. This is what contributes to inflammatory responses in our body resulting in diabetes, high blood pressure and/or cancer. We as black people in this society must take note of this.
Drink More Water
This is one of the easiest, and safest modifications we as African Americans can make. Water doesn't have fat, and it shouldn't have sugar. Our bodies are made of mostly water, so this is what we should drink.
Avoid drinking juices, soda's, and alcoholic beverages. These items have empty calories and provide very little to no vitamins and/or minerals. However, they do provide unnecessary sugars. These extra sugars contribute to our increased rates of diabetes. Instead of juice or soda, drink more water; try flavoring your water with squeezed oranges, or lemons. Of course not ever drinking these items isn't realistic, but we should drink water 95% of the time.
