Society's Image of a Black Woman
As a black woman we must be happy with who we are. We are constantly bombarded with images of "beauty" which often times doesn't resemble us. We have to realize, this is a Eurocentric society. European features are considered the standard for beauty.Who cares about the tone of your skin, the texture of your hair, what kind of clothes you wear. Sure there is absolutely nothing wrong with changing up your hairstyle every once in a while but you should also think about are you doing it for the right reasons. This is hard for most of us. In this society what is considered beautiful for women is light complexion, long hair, thin, small to medium size lips, full breasts, and so forth. So what if you have none of these. Does that mean you are not beautiful? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Black women naturally have different shades of brown complexion, may have short or long hair, lips range in size, breast, butt, etc. We are born with all different types of traits so whatever traits you were given be happy with it. This of course doesn’t mean if you are 80lbs over weight you should be flaunting yourself everywhere without caring about your health. We all have things that we may need to improve. So be happy in your own skin, no matter what clothes you wear or hairstyle you have you are still a black woman.
